brothers {homemade portrait tips}

I love these two.  I love how Javi cracks up at the things Manny says.
And I love how Manny knows he can make brother laugh.

I told them to be "super brothers"!

The idea came into my mind the day before yesterday.
I wanted to photograph my boys, just the two of them.
I just wasn't sure when.

Yesterday, I decided to seize the opportunity of a beautiful morning.

As I was taking these pictures, it occurred to me that I may be able to pass on some helpful tips to anyone else who might like to take some "homemade portraits" of their children.

I wish I had not deleted the photos that I took at the beginning of this session.  Because if I were to show them to you, you would see fake, cheesy smiles.  You would see two little boys who don't quite know what to do with themselves while momma is pointing her big black camera at them.  We just had to get a little warmed up.

Although I still do it sometimes...I am trying to break the habit of saying "Say cheese!"  Sometimes it works fine, but most of the time I get a "fake" smile.  So, how did I get those smiles?  I asked them questions and we chatted a bit...and before long, those genuine smiles emerged.

I still have a lot to learn and I am by no means a pro, but here is how I do "homemade portraits"...

>>The best time of day is an hour (or two) after the sun comes up or an hour before the sun goes down, often referred to as the "golden hour".  You don't want bright sun shining in their eyes so that they can barely look at the camera without squinting.  With the boys, in these photos, it was 9am and we picked a mostly shady spot in the front yard.  It's a good thing that these are the best times of the day to take photos because it's also the times of day that my children tend to be in their best moods!

>>Consider your background.  Take a test shot and see how things look.  Make sure it's a good spot before the kids are positioned.  One thing I recently learned is to be careful about putting my subject directly in front of a bush.  The branches can be a distraction in the photo and can look as if they are growing out of the person's head!  Not good.  I'm learning to avoid distracting elements as much as possible.

>>I sat them as close together as possible.  This is soooo important.

>>I ask them questions or prompt them to tell me about things.  This worked especially well with two of them because Javi kept laughing at the cute things Manny would say, which in turn would make Manny laugh too.  I said things like "Tell about your favorite ice cream" or "What are you going to do with daddy when he comes home?" or "Remember when...?"  You're looking for anything that will get them talking and thinking less about that camera.  Interact with them and keep it relaxed.  Sometimes I even position the camera in the spot I want it, hold it there and look out from behind the lens at them to react to what they are saying.  And all the while, I am pressing the shutter release.  With babies, you might discover a funny noise that makes them smile.  I won't even try to describe the one I make for Isabel, but for some reason she loves it!  And it grabs her attention.  She also loves it when I talk sweetly to her.

>>I take a ton of pictures.  This is the beauty of digital photography.  Take pictures from many different angles.  I am often amazed at how just a slightly different angle can dramatically improve the look of the photo.  Try many different angles.  Get down on the ground and get up close.  Try different things. You will be so glad you did.  Because just when you think you've got a pretty good photo, you get one that is even better!  You will end up deleting many photos, but at least you will have some gems!

>>If you're on a tight budget like me, download Picassa to edit your photos.  It's fun and it's free!

I hope you enjoy taking some "homemade portraits" of your own soon!

sittin' pretty {photos of Isabel}

The clouds were gray, but no rain yet.  I just had to put her in the sweet little dress Grandma brought when she came to visit.  I slipped out the back door to capture the light of her smile.

I realized just the other day that she sits up without any help and hardly ever falls over.

I am enjoying my days with her.  It's so funny how she interacts with her brothers and sisters.  She doesn't want to miss a thing and happily joins them in their adventures, so long as Joelle or Brienne carry her along.

So far, the only thing I have had to tell her "no" for, are grabbing my glasses or blowing raspberries while eating her carrots.  I know the day is coming soon when I will have to correct her much, much more...I am already telling myself to get ready, it's coming!

But for now, it's all about eat, sleep, play, cuddle and repeat.  I'm lovin' it.

By the way, I never thought I would do it, but I'm making my own baby food!  Nothing complicated.  I simply mash a banana in a ziploc baggie.  Or I chop and boil veggies and food process them, then freeze them in small portions.  Who knew it would be so simple?!  Try Googling it to find out more.  I haven't compared prices yet, but I'm sure it saves money too!

Portraits of a six month old sweetie [Isabel]

This little one seems to have had quite the growth spurt.
This was the first time I put this dress on her.  It was Clara's,
and thankfully I remembered I had it before Isabel got too big for it!
I knew I had to get some photographs quick in an attempt to
capture how sweet Isabel is as a six month old baby.

She's eating baby food, which probably explains the growth spurt.
She's been rolling over for a while now, so no more leaving her
on a bed or the couch unless you want her to roll onto the floor!
She is obsessed with her fingers and chews on them frequently.
In fact, just about everything she can grab goes straight to her mouth.
I think it's the cutest thing.  Especially when she grabs daddy's face
with both hands and she pulls her face close to his to give him a big "kiss"!
A very wet one I might add...let's just say both of her parents
laugh hysterically when she does this.

She has some of the biggest smiles I've ever seen.
And you should hear her laugh when we tickle her, it's wonderful!
Now that she has the ability to grab and hold things,
it's such a joy to see her interested in her toys and playing with them.

She's growing fast, just like her brothers and sisters before her.
And you know, with all of the challenges that process entails at times,
I have to say, it is a beautiful and precious experience!

We love this little sweetie and couldn't imagine a day without her.

somebunny loves me!

{smiling at momma}

{Peek a boo!  I see you!}

Isabel is starting to "talk" a little bit.  Little coos accompanied by earnest facial expressions.  She seems like she'd have a lot to say if only she had the words.  Isn't the desire and ability to communicate such a precious gift from God?

When I look into Isabel's face and talk sweetly, she responds with smiles and raises her eyebrows.  She coos as if to say "I love you."

What an amazing blessing she is.

Sometimes when I am with her, I have looked down at her face and realized that she has been intently staring at me.  This is new.  It kind of surprised me on a couple occasions.  It made me laugh and say "Hi there, sweetie!"  Isabel would just smile big and continue to watch me so very intently.  Babies are probably the only ones I don't mind staring at me.  :)

One of my favorite things is when she wakes up from sleeping all swaddled up in a blanket and as the blanket has loosened she is able to pop out her little arms and stretch.  I love the expression on her face when she does this, all scrunched up and smiley as she looks up at me.  I kiss those little arms and drink in her soft baby sweetness.  It's so wonderful to be a mother.

The smiles we were so eager to see

Isn't a baby's smile the most beautiful thing on earth?!

We have been waiting for these precious smiles since day one.

There has been so much excitement in our home whenever Isabel's face lights up with a smile.

So fresh and new.  So expressive of how happy she feels.  So very beautiful.  My heart just melts.

I soak it up, I treasure it, and now I can't wait to hear her laugh!

{many thanks to Joelle for assisting me and talking to Isabel while I took her picture!}

The beauty of her smile {photos of Clara}

Riding on the springy horsey the neighbors passed to us over the fence when they moved.
Enjoying her imaginary ride off into the sunset.
Four years old and ever so sweet.
She's wearing a shirt that Amera wore when she was four.
How quickly the time seems to pass!
I love capturing these moments.
